5k, 10k, 13.1 miles and Beyond?

So! What’s happened since New Year?

Lots and lots of running!

I’ve been attending Walsall Parkrun regularly & my PB for the 5k route has reduced from 33:26 to 31:59. I’d never have dreamt I’d make so much progress so quickly.

I’ve been trying to see what I can do with beginning to stretch how far I can run, as I’m signed up to do the Market Drayton 10k in May. I started by walking 1km, then running 1km and repeat. This actually felt too easy!
So I upped it to 0.5km walk with 1.5km run and repeat. This felt challenging but not impossible, so decided to try this out for a while & gradually reduce the walking.

This didn’t quite go to plan. As I’ve moved up to intermediates at the West Bromwich Harriers, I was expecting to start pushing my limits with them – I didn’t expect that to happen in my 2nd week! Our run leader, Jim, took us on a 5 mile run including what he calls ‘efforts’ (and I call torture!) – for short periods upping the pace and then slowing down for recovery. I was amazed to find I coped with it & made a new friend who dragged me round the last 2 miles by chatting away and distracting me! (Thank you Lorraine!).

I then accidentally ran 5 miles on my own. I went for a 3.5 mile run before work last Friday, but didn’t plan my route & by the time I realised there was no point in cutting it short, so went for it. And did it in 57:37!

So on that basis I decided at having a go at the full 10k run on Sunday. I completed it in 1hr 09 minutes. So now I know I can do it, I’ve just got to practise & build up my stamina & strength.

A friend has talked me into the Birmingham Half Marathon in October – so the planning begins!

Me & my 9 year old are also going to do the Sport Relief team 1.5k Swimathon in March. (Think I’m going to be a proud mummy that day!)

In the mean time, I’ve been reflecting again as my Aspire Channel Swim medal arrived. I swam 22 miles in 12 weeks & many of you sponsored & encouraged me. I raised £135 in total!

So with Swimathon 5k & the Santa Dash 5k, I earned three medals last year, and I’m so excited about what this year will bring!
